Published: 11 October 2023

Chattogram, 11 October 2023: The vibrant city of Chattogram played host to a gathering of journalists from various national and local media outlets who came together for a pivotal workshop on investigative journalism and journalist safety at the BRAC Learning Centre. This event, a collaborative effort by the UNESCO Dhaka Office and Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), aimed to equip media professionals with essential investigative skills and underscore the critical importance of their safety in an increasingly challenging field.

Balancing Investigative Excellence with Safety

Investigative journalism is often celebrated as the lifeblood of democracy, responsible for unveiling corruption, and injustice, and holding those in power accountable. However, this noble pursuit can be perilous, with journalists frequently facing threats, intimidation, and even violence. The workshop's primary objective was to empower journalists with critical investigative techniques while providing safety measures.

A Day of Learning

The workshop, inaugurated by Susan Vize, Officer-in-Charge of the UNESCO Dhaka Office, offered a day of intensive learning opportunities for the participating journalists. Its key highlights included coverage of topics aligned with the UNESCO Protection of Journalists Manual, emphasising safety and excellence in investigative journalism. The participants learnt about the dangers that journalists face as well as strategies for identifying and mitigating risks. Additionally, they were equipped with tools and techniques for conducting in-depth investigations. The workshop underscored the importance of effectively presenting investigation findings, and making information accessible to a wide audience.

Empowering a New Generation

Thirty young journalists, working for various national and local newspapers, online news portals, and television channels, participated in the event. The day concluded with the distribution of certificates to all participants in recognition of their dedication to acquiring new skills regarding investigative journalism.

A Safer Path Forward

TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, in his speech on the occasion, focused on the importance of safety for journalists. He remarked, “Journalism involves risks in every country, including Bangladesh. However, ensuring professionalism is essential in dealing with these risks and professional hazards. I hope the government will take steps to ensure the rights for independent media as stated in the constitution, providing enough room for journalists to work independently.” He also reiterated TIB's unwavering support for journalists through various capacity-building initiatives and institutional cooperation, emphasising their crucial role in the fight against corruption.
