Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), in collaboration with Digitally Right Ltd and Internews, launched a one-of-a-kind Network Measurement Training for tech-savvy youths from all over the country. TIB hosted the training in two phases at its Dhanmondi office on November 21 and 22.
As the number of internet users increased exponentially in Bangladesh, there has also been a steep rise in internet restrictions in various forms. Internet throttling, shutdowns, and systematic disruptions are common tactics used to suppress political opposition, dissent, access to information, and individual voices that dare to speak against corruption. In light of these challenges, there is a need to create evidence-based arguments against internet suppression.
The Network Measurement Training is a step towards developing the capacity of anti-corruption activists who aim to protect free and fair access to the internet and the fundamental rights associated with it. Participants, selected through a rigorous process, learned why and how internet shutdowns are enforced, how they can be measured, and how datasets can be used for research and analysis.
While inaugurating the training event, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said, “This unique training is important as social and political challenges are evolving. Access to the internet is now considered a human right by the United Nations, and it is increasingly important to protect that right. It is imperative that the youths who participate in this training use their newly earned skills for the betterment of individuals and societies.”
In total, 31 volunteers from 8 divisions of Bangladesh participated in the training in two phases. Top training performers will also participate in a six-month fellowship to further contribute their skills in internet rights related-advocacy.
