Dhaka 17 October 2014: TIB today expressed its satisfaction over withdrawal of a false case by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) against Limon who lost his leg upon firing by RAB personnel and also demanded exemplary punishment of those involved in filing this false, conspirational and harassment case against him.
In a statement TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said, “While people will be relieved that Limon and his family have finally been acquitted of the conspiratorial cases, this is just one important step towards justice.” He called upon the government to bring the perpetrators to justice in the due process and award exemplary punishment in a manner that no further violation of this type takes place particularly by members of the law enforcement agencies.
“Limon should be compensated by the agency that was involved in this gross violation of fundamental right in an inhuman way. The government should take the responsibility to financially support Limon and his family until he completes his education and is professionally sound to sustain himself and his family independently” he said.
Dr Zaman also said that such incidence of violation of human rights against an innocent citizen by a professional and elite force like RAB has critically reduced the people’s confidence over the law and order enforcing agency and there is no other alternative but to bring the culprits to justice by forming a high powered investigation team.
He said “Limon’s example is an embarrassing example of lack of professionalism, accountability and overall governance. The tendency of turning the protector’s role into abuser must be resisted. Failure to bring the culprits to justice will be considered as much ado about nothing toward government’s commitment to turn law enforcing agencies as people friendly force”.
