Biography
Philip Gain is a journalist who has spent the last three decades working on human rights and environmental issues in Bangladesh. He combines investigative journalism with a systematic approach to policy change to bring attention to the plight of marginalised groups such as tea plantation workers and indigenous peoples.
His work has resulted in several widely-read and highly regarded books, reports, films, and photography exhibitions, including “Stolen Forest”, “Survival on the Fringe: Adivasis of Bangladesh”, “Slaves in These Times: Tea Communities of Bangladesh”, and “Lower Depths: Little-Known Ethnic Communities of Bangladesh”.
As an adjunct faculty member at Independent University, Bangladesh, Mr. Gain teaches environmental communication, development communication, and advanced reporting courses. He is also the founder director of the Society of Environment and Human Development (SHED) and programmme director of Brattyajan Resource Centre (BRC), which assists marginalised and excluded communities in Bangladesh. Mr. Gain has worked for several publications, including Rocky Mountain News in the USA and Dhaka Courier news magazine, and he has received a fellowship from Yale University.
